How conservative is the Pope? This conservative: http://www.catholicnewsagency.com/resource.php?n=497
Golias magazine notes that while the Vatican bends over backwards to accommodate the Society of Pius X it has been full of suspicion and mistrust of another Society, historically its most loyal and competent collaborator, namely the Society of Jesus.
Golias lists (I don't know how accurately) the following Jesuit theologians as under doctrinal high surveillance: Jose Ignacio Gonzales Faus, Mateos, Freïjo, Juan Antonio Estrada, Alegria, Jose Maria Castillo, Jose Ramon Busto, Aloysius Pieris, Moreno de Souza (d. 2007), Samuel Rayan, Francis X. D’sa, Sye-Kongseok, Cheong Yang, Bernard Sesboue, Joseph Moingt, Christophe Theobald, Aguirre, Thomas Reese. Roger Haight and Cardinal Martini are also mentioned, as well as the deceased Dupuis, and de Mello. This is nothing less than a war on intelligence and scholarship, and it has already caused a tragic brain drain in the ranks of Catholic theology.
Anti-intellectualism and paranoia about open discussion also lie behind the fix the Church has got itself in about abortion, as evidenced in the cruel actions of Archbishop Sobrinho, whose appointment caused his predecessor Helder Câmara to weep.

For a documented chronicle of some of John Paul II's repressive actions, see http://www.terrelibere.it/index.php?x=completa&riga=207#_Toc110484523 (Italian); www.adistaonline.it/speciali/76spagnolo.pdf (Spanish).
Adista notes that on succeeding to Helder Câmara in 1985, MsgJosé Cardoso Sobrinho immediately set about dismantling the work of his predecessor, through closing his seminaries and expelling many teachers, religious and priests close to Liberation Theology (see Adista n. 57/95), a fine pastoral and evangelical movement which the then Cardinal Ratzinger described as "heretical," "atheistic," "un-Christian" and separated from orthodoxy by "a gaping abyss."
The embarrassment suffered today by the Vatican is the direct result of their promotion of this man, one of the many abusers who have attained power in the Church under John Paul II. And the embarrassments are bound to go on and on and on...
