I always imagine Newman smiling slyly when someone or other tries to make him fit a particular school of thought. He evades that to this day, just as he determined to in life.

"They will tell you at once, that the subject is not to be inquired into, for [or?] that it is impossible to inquire into it at all without being technical and subtile."

## "For that" is good if old-fashioned English meaning "on account of the fact that; because".
