My heading is somewhat inflammatory, but it summarizes what Massimo Faggioli relates, in his usual limpid style and with the authoritative serenity of a well-informed church historian, in the following piece: http://www.ilregno.it/php/view_pdf.php?md5=0cd3c5400ea217a5729276ab75fe4b27
In becoming megaphones for the Republican party, the bishops have rendered themselves incapable of relating to their flock, especially its vast Hispanic component. Ironically, President Obama is the closest any US President, F. D. Roosevelt included, has ever been to the principles of Catholic Social Teaching.
Well said! That Obama is the U.S. politician of recent times closest Catholic social teaching is a brilliant insight, which one would hope would occur to U.S. bishops.
